Security and belonging are the foundation of our classroom environment. Our students come from different backgrounds and experiences, but for many, school becomes a sanctuary for them. I am requesting a beautiful rug to go in our community meeting area. We begin each day in our community area and this is where we welcome each student. We also use this time to prepare for our day. We create spaces in our classroom that are calming and peaceful. When students feel safe and at peace, they can focus on their learning. The items I am requesting will help foster a feeling of tranquility and peace in our classroom as well as allow for movement during work time to help focus struggling learners. In addition to the rug, I am requesting two ball chairs for my students to use. These ball chairs make it possible for students to be moving their bodies while still working in a partner group. This kind of movement break can help students to focus their minds and use up some of their extra energy. The rug in the community meeting area will also be used as a choice for flexible seating during partner or independent work time. When students are allowed to choose a comfortable, calm place work, they work harder and are more productive. Allowing students to choose where to work fosters a sense of pride and responsibility as well. I can't wait to show our students these amazing additions to our classroom sanctuary.
