Spelling instruction is one of the hardest things to teach but as you know it is one of the most important subjects! I want to bring in some new fun resources to help my students with their spelling instruction. You may have noticed, that we use a different term for spelling instruction, it's called Word Study! Here is a little blurb that explains what word study is: "Word study is an approach to spelling instruction that moves away from a focus on memorization...Word study also teaches students how to use this word knowledge strategically to support their spelling attempts during writing activities and to help them decode unfamiliar words while reading" (Bear & Templeton, 1998).
My idea is to have at least 3 different word study centers up and running while I am pulling a small group. I want to have to the option to switch out word study centers so that my kids will stay engaged. Here are some of my center ideas: building words with magnetic letters, stamping words, building words with play dough, using fun worksheets in sheet protectors with dry erase markers, etc. Students will be using a list of words based on their spelling development. These list will be laminated so that they will last!
