I teach at a middle school in California. One hundred percent of our population qualifies for free lunch. Many of the students are from immigrant families and the local high school drop out rate is high. California schools have taken a big hit due to state and federal budget shortfalls. At this time our school is struggling to have enough paper to get through the year and requests for materials for enriching activities are often rejected. All classroom activities beyond the textbook curriculum are funded 100% by the classroom teacher. My students have spent time studying space in an elective Space Science class for which I have no curriculum and have had to create and purchase materials myself. These classes are intended to be motivation to come to school and improve scores in other classes.
