I teach ninth grade English, and I love the impressionable age group that I see every day! Unfortunately, many of my students are four or more reading grade levels behind. Comprehension and vocabulary will only improve with reading! In an attempt to get my kids excited about reading as opposed to reading because it's mandatory, I have selected books for the classroom library--all KBA books--that will interest the students and possibly give the kids an outlet due to possibly seeing themselves in the characters. As a Title I school, we have limited funding to purchase anything that is not mandatory. I understand that teachers have to prepare kids for state assessments; however, finding pleasure in reading a book can and WILL only lead to successes in many areas. Whether a child is planning on college or not, reading is a fundamental necessity to be successful anywhere. I hope to build a beautiful classroom library that will serve as a springboard to positive futures for my kids!
