Research on adolescent literacy and poverty suggests that struggling adolescent readers from low-income backgrounds struggle with reading partially because they have had less exposure to the vocabulary necessary to understand texts at their grade level. Part of my responsibility as an intervention teacher is to expose my students to as many words as I can and encourage them to use the words they've learned daily through speaking, reading, and writing activities. Every 2 weeks, we have a "vocab day" where students use the dictionary to find synonyms and antonyms for each word on their vocab list. The vocab list we worked on recently had 6 words on it. For each word, student searched for 3 synonyms and 3 antonyms, meaning that they were exposed to a total of 42 new words in just ONE class period. Students really love this activity and they are always motivated by the number of words they are able to learn in one class period. It doesn't seem overwhelming to them because rather than mindlessly memorizing words, they get to see how words are connected. Currently, we borrow dictionaries that are falling apart. I would love to have a crisp, new set of dictionaries to give each kid as they work to become the Word Masters I know they can be!
