I teach at a K-8 school in Southern California. These children are Title 1 students, of all varied ethnicity. Most if not all of these students have a low socioeconomic status with parents that are rarely involved. These students walk or ride public transit home, and in most cases arrive to find an empty house. My students hold the role of mother, father, sister, or brother to their siblings, and carryout responsibilities meant for the parents in the household. However in most cases all of these students have a smart phone. This smart phone is the source of all their entertainment, their way to communicate with their friends and family, and one of the only things they hold incredibly valuable. Despite the odds stacked against them, my students are incredibly hard working, responsible, involved in school activities, and respectful. These students deserve the best education can give them, and the best I can give them.
