Third graders are curious and genuinely concerned about fairness and justice in their stage of development. They have questions to big ideas in our world. Help give my students opportunities through children's literature to learn about identity, diversity, justice, and how to rise up and help others. These powerful texts connected to social justice standards (from tolerance.org) will assist in our meaningful age-appropriate conversations around empathy, race, compassion, discrimination, acceptance, love, prejudice, diversity, bias, culture, etc. These texts feature empowering, authentic, and positive depictions of characters of color and characters from underrepresented/oppressed groups. While we may or may not be together in person all the time, these texts can be used through distance learning. I want all my students to continue to develop a positive self-concept and these children's books will help provide a safe place to discuss and critically think about important topics in our lives. Not only will we use these titles for discussion but they will be the primer for projects and activities to further their learning.
