I teach 8th grade English at a school in a high poverty area of my town where every student qualifies for free lunch. The majority of my students are from households that don't have overflowing bookshelves, and their only source of literacy is within our classrooms. We have just finished reading The Outsiders which has allowed my students to embrace the idea of reading novels. While reading the novel, I had requests to read another novel later this school year, and The Hunger Games was at the top of the list. I feel that reading this book would foster an even deeper appreciation for reading that began with reading The Outsiders.
