I teach in a high poverty rural area in western Michigan. Many families struggle to meet their basic needs, so books at home are often considered a luxury. My kindergartners love having books in their hands and are eager to learn to read. Our classroom story time is cherished, but my students need additional opportunities to experience stories. When reading at home is not a priority, opportunities at school for reading and listening to reading become even more critical. The listening center materials I have requested will help foster a love of reading and provide positive examples of fluent reading. Many of my students enter kindergarten without having previously attended pre-school or kindergarten readiness programs. These students need intense small group teaching in both literacy and math. I use independent stations like the listening center to engage students in meaningful activities while I meet separately with struggling, on target, or advanced learners.
