As an elementary school administrator, I have the privilege of seeing our school from a perspective that reaches far beyond the walls of a single classroom. At Dixie Hansel Elementary, we are a family of approximately 630 students and 80 dedicated staff members, all working together to create a place where children feel loved, supported, and inspired to learn. Our school is full of incredible potential, but we also recognize that our students and staff have needs that extend beyond what traditional school resources can provide. Approximately 55% of our students come from economically disadvantaged households, and 40% of the students we serve are English language learners who are working hard to develop their language skills while navigating their educational journeys. Behind every number is a child with a story, a family doing its best, and a teacher who wants to give their very best every single day. As an administrator, I see a bigger picture. I see the needs that may not be obvious during a classroom visit. I see teachers spending their own money to create meaningful learning experiences, students who would benefit from resources their families may not be able to provide, and opportunities to make a difference that might otherwise go unmet. I carry those needs with me because I believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive and every educator deserves to feel supported in the work they do. My greatest hope is that every student and staff member loves Hansel and feels that they belong here. I want our students to walk through our doors knowing they are valued, cared for, and capable of amazing things. I want our teachers to know they have someone in their corner who will listen, advocate, problem-solve, and do everything possible to help them succeed. Whether that means finding resources for a student, supporting a teacher’s creative idea, or filling a need that might otherwise go unmet, I want our entire school community to know that they are never alone. While many projects focus on the needs of an individual classroom, my page is dedicated to addressing campus-wide needs and opportunities that affect our larger school family. These are the gaps that can sometimes go unseen because they don’t belong to just one teacher, one grade level, or one group of students. They belong to all of us. Every donation, no matter the size, helps us create a school where students have more opportunities, teachers feel more supported, and our entire community can flourish.
