Flexible seating empowers students; it allows them to make choices. These choices benefit students by helping them become more self-aware of what types of seating help them learn best. Currently, during independent working times, my students choose a location in the classroom that works best for them. Students generally choose to sit at different tables, to sit or lay down on the classroom rug with a clipboard, to sit in our classroom library area, to sit at the computer tables, or just plop down on the floor with a clipboard. When my students have a choice to work around the room instead of strictly at their desks, they are noticeably more engaged and motivated. Having a comfortable place to sit would make our flexible seating areas more appealing and stimulating. The seating options I have selected for my classroom will benefit all students, including those that have learning disabilities. Currently, I have purchased one wobble stool for my classroom and students constantly ask to use it. Wobble stools give wiggly students a place to sit that isn’t stationary, so it helps them focus on their work while constantly moving. This was especially helpful during MCAS, our high-stakes test. The beanbag chairs will provide a comfy seating option, while the stools will provide transportable accommodations. The 8 red chairs will furnish the tables with extra seating so more students will have access to chairs if desired. Flexible seating has had positive effects on my past students. I am super excited to see the effects that COMFORTABLE seating will have on my new students!
