The kindergarten curriculum of today is much more demanding than of years past. Our kindergarten students are asked to be able to read complete books and not just know the alphabet. They need to be able to add and subtract and not just recognize numbers to 10. Kindergarteners need to be able to write short paragraphs. We have not only changed what we teach, but how we teach. Teachers use technology in whole group lessons as well as allowing individual students to use technology in order to practice learned skills. Teachers have increased reliance on the internet to develop and implement classroom lessons on a daily basis to meet the ever growing academic needs of our students. Due to budget constraints of public schools, classroom teachers do not always have up to date technology that allows for equal access to online educational programs. Classroom computers are often out dated and do not have the speed or memory to run many of the educational programs available that meet current academic standards. Having a classroom computer, like the MacBook Pro, with the latest technology would allow me to revitalize my teaching in all areas of the curriculum. So often, teachers are prevented access to resources because their computer is several years old. Educational sites that offer skill practices in reading and math could be projected for whole group lessons. Sites that provide videos could be accessed to provide instruction in science. It is so important that schools recognize the need for current technology in all classrooms, including kindergarten.
