My classroom has a lot of non-pitched percussion instruments (e.g. maracas, tambourines, etc.) but it is lacking in pitched instruments (e.g. xylophones, glockenspiels). The ukulele is a great pitched instrument for beginners because its soft nylon strings are gentle on your fingertips and don't create finger pain like guitars do. Plus, it only has four strings, which makes chord shapes and scales easy for little ones to learn. And last but not least, they are gentle on the ears. Not only will the ukulele improve their music literacy skills, but it's an outlet for emotional and artistic expression and community building. As they strum their ukuleles and sing and unison together, they will be creating a special bond together amid the pandemic.
