My students have a lot of wonderful books in our classroom library and they appreciate every one of them. It's important to me to make it more inclusive, though. I want every child to have the opportunity to browse through our classroom library and find books with characters who look like them and/or have similar backgrounds and/or experiences. Multicultural literature serves as a powerful tool in enabling students to gain a better understanding of both their own culture and the cultures of others. In addition, culturally relevant texts increase student engagement, which inevitably leads to substantial growth in vocabulary and reading skills.
