My students range from 6th to 8th grade, but vary greatly in academic and emotional abilities. The goal of this project was to help build an improved classroom environment and give my students more positive sensory and educational experiences. Different manipulatives, seating arrangements and sensory tools can drastically impact my student's day. As their teacher it is important that I help them find what works for them. It takes a wide range of sensory resources to help them explore solutions for their specific needs. While these materials and supplies do not teach my students academic skills, they do help them learn necessary coping skills. Yoga balls, bean bags, seat pads and stools give my students flexible seating options. Students who move around a lot often fall from our 4 legged chairs and need seats that move as much as they do. Items such as fidgets, therabands and chewable jewelry allow students with anxiety to channel their energy to a designated object, instead of chewing on and ripping necessary school supplies. As the classroom environment becomes more appropriate for my students we can focus on fun and structured academic skills. I included literacy games to the project with the vision of working on centers with each child sitting comfortably in their flexible seating with their necessary physical accommodations made. Interventions and literacy skills are the heart of my curriculum. I would love to give my students who struggle at school an opportunity to have fun with learning. The donations to this project will help improve my students coping skills and therefore reduce behavioral issues and distractions. Students will have proper sensory stimulation resulting in more productive lessons. Please help me give my students the sensory and intervention tools they deserve.
