My students are from an inner city area of Indianapolis. Many are from single parent homes or are being raised by their grandparents. My students often do not enter first grade with the literacy background needed to be successful readers. They have not been read to and often are not familiar with classic children's books. We read books daily and they love finding those books in the classroom library to cozy up to. Upon entering first grade, many of my students can not read at all. At this point in the year, they are able to choose library books that they can read! There is nothing like watching a young student pick a book and then realize they can read the words inside! They feel pure joy! My students work hard every day to become lifelong readers and should have a cozy place to do it!
