I have 23 students, many struggling in fluency, and I have created “podcast book bags” which are sent home weekly for students to practice. At the beginning of each week students record a podcast and publish it for other students to “read-along” with. This is in line with STEM goals and provides reading practice in many ways. 1. Repeated readings are vital in developing fluency. 2. Creating the podcasts give students a reason and motivation to read, and read well! 3. Struggling students can then have access to many books by listening to a podcast while reading along to develop their own reading skills. The struggling students are developing their own podcasts as well; with books at their own level, so all students are involved! 4. Technology motivates them! My student are so excited about creating these podcasts as well as listening to themselves and their peers, while reading along!
