Flexible Seating. It's an idea I am very excited about trying in my 22nd year of teaching. I am always looking to be innovative and current in my classroom, and this summer I have researched several sources on the value of redesigning my classroom to offer choices about successful working environments for 4th graders. I have researched several sources to support this innovative thinking and the best words I have found are the ones written by the flexible seating guru herself, Kayla Delzer, an amazing teacher in North Dakota. She states: "Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them? Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks all day." This was the statement that started it all. I have already begun work to change my classroom to reflect the values of a flexible seating arrangement by searching garage sales and Goodwill stores gathering furniture options, but I need a little more help. With these requested two Gaiam Balance Ball Chairs, I am adding a seating option that will attract students who need more stimulation as they listen or work with others within independent work time. I am hoping to try these Balance Ball chairs and encourage parents who see them in use next year to donate more.
