My students will be reading Lemony Snicket's The Bad Beginning to provide an engaging experience in the lives of the Baudelaire siblings. We will use the class novel to explore literary devices, genre, and critical thinking skills. My hope is that this novel will lead students to continue the series and provide them an opportunity to increase their independent reading abilities. Students will dive in to the world of the Baudelaire children and their true misfortune as they read and engage in collaborative discussions that transform their reading and thinking abilities. The characters and plot in this series are unlike any others. Many of my students read below grade level and hate the idea of reading in general; I chose this book in particular because it will hopefully reach reluctant readers and prove to be an enrichment for those who enjoy reading.
