I teach at a Title 1 school which means the majority of my students are from a low income family. A large percentage of the students are English Language Learners (ELL) and the majority that aren't classified as ELL students are English impoverished. I am the intervention teacher for grades K, 1 and 2. The students that I see on a daily basis are lacking in books and the exposure needed to be good readers. Most do not own a single book. Their families care a great deal about their child's education but do not have the resources necessary to provide their children with age appropriate reading material. We work hard to give our students what they need but can't possibly purchase everything necessary to help these children catch up to the reading levels of students who are not from a low income family.
