Students across the world walk into their classrooms excited to start their day! They are excited to meet the day's challenges head on and ready to continue their learning. They sit down, and are instantly presented with a paper and pencil task aimed to drill skills and keep them quiet. Happy faces are instantly turned to frowns. But what if mornings didn't have to be this way? What if students could walk into a classroom, and instead of paper and pencil tasks aimed at keeping kids quiet, they were met with fun and engaging challenges that fostered their creativity and collaboration? This project is aimed to create a classroom that encourages students to explore, create, and build their social skills. Instead of a quiet classroom, we want students to talk, discuss, explain, problem solve, and collaborate. This alternative to rote morning work will promote engagement throughout the day. We are asking for items such as magna tiles, puzzles, Legos, play do, marbles runs, and more in order to gear students toward starting the day on a positive note. When students start on a positive note, they are more likely to be successful throughout the rest of the day. Play is the job of children. Play can promote compassion and critical thinking. So while some may consider paper and pencil tasks as the only way to begin their day, I beg to differ. I believe our way will help create a generation of students excited about school and their learning.
