This year my students and I have chosen the writing method of "RACE" writing, in order to analyze what we write when we answer a question. "RACE" stands for restate, answer, cite, and explain. My class practices restating and answering the question exactly; staying on topic. We cite a quote from the reading, in order to support our answer. The explain portion covers why the citation they chose, is the best example for supporting their answer. Explaining why they answer the way they did, reminds the students to stay focused on what was being asked. When students write an answer, they need to see where their writing leads them. They have come to me, asking to highlight what they are writing. When we read through informational texts they have learned to highlight the important heading and details that go along with that topic. By teaching them to highlight what is being read on the page, allows them to focus on what needs to be understood. Therefore, we have decided to highlight what we write in order to make sure every piece of the question is answered fully. The simple fact of showing them how to highlight on a computer, allows them to feel accomplished and confident in what they are turning in. Students absolutely love to see what they have written in color, and printing it lights up their face with excitement and encourages them to go back and check! What a great skill to for them to learn without them realizing it! Using the underlining or highlighting tools in a word document, can help them practice "RACE" simply by adding color. These procedures helps set in organizational practices that will guide them throughout their writing in the future, on computers, and during the rest of their academic career!
