It is critical that our instruction remain current and relevant to students' interests. Playing ukulele is one way we invite student preference to music instruction while providing a musical skill that students can realistically use for the rest of their lives. Because students are invested in this learning, they are motivated to improve their performance over time and produce a performance-quality final product. For this reason, ukuleles are an excellent way to reinforce MU:Pr5.5.2 (Rehearse to refine technical accuracy and expressive qualities to address challenges, and show improvement over time). As any musician will tell you, the best way to rehearse and improve over time is PRACTICE! With only 2 30-minute sessions per week and so much content to cover, there isn't much open-ended practice time left in our lessons. That's where the Makala Waterman Ukuleles come in... With these durable and high-quality instruments, students will be able to practice at home to refine their technical accuracy and expression, whether they are learning in person at school or digitally due to exclusion. I was able to check out ukuleles at my previous school site out with great success; there was high demand from students for check-outs, and student performance quality increased with each day of at-home practice! By checking out ukuleles to bring home, students build valuable life skills that will be necessary when they advance to middle school, such as responsibility for the instrument, independent music-making, reflection during practice, and self-motivation to improve. I have seen first-hand how putting instruments in students' hands improves their musicianship and their self-confidence, and I am excited to bring this program to this school site!
