I teach 3rd grade students at a rural K-12 school. Currently, our school has a free and/or reduced lunch rate of 75%. Many of my students come to 3rd grade reading on a 1st grade level. Because of the high poverty rate in our community, many of my students do not have access to reading materials at home, so the majority of their independent reading is done at school in my classroom. When choosing a book, my students often encounter one of two problems: 1) The book is one that interests them, but it is too difficult for them to read independently, or 2) The book is one that they can read independently but it is not of interest to them (the most common complaint I get is that they are "baby books.") I would like to receive books that will help bridge the gap, and provide my students with books that are engaging and interesting to them, but also written on a level that will allow my students to read them independently.
