My students are 7th and 8th graders. They are usually involved in a wide variety of activities and are under a lot of pressure to succeed. Students at my school are generally high academic achievers, however this makes it even more difficult for the non super-achievers. The art room is a place where students can thrive even if they are struggling academically, athletically, or socially. Students learn the value of team work by working in groups with responsibilities at both the group and individual level. Many of them have had little or no art in elementary school so they lack a basic visual art foundation.
