Today's students begin kindergarten with little to no reading and writing skills. Many have never held a pencil or crayon in their lives. However, almost all of them have held and are very comfortable using a tablet, iPad or cellphone. These 21st century kids learn the best when they interact with their learning tools. A touchscreen on a tablet is perfect for them because it keeps them engaged with the task at hand, whether it be reading or working on an app that was created to help them develop the reading skills that they will need to be successful. It is simply amazing to see the transformation of these your minds through the course of their first year in elementary school. I have witnessed this transformation time and time again, and have noticed that the students who have more access to technology, have the highest rates of improvement. I currently have 5 student computers in my classroom and my whole class gets to go to the computer lab 2 times per week when there is no testing. This is simply not enough exposure for each of my 25 students to improve on their phonics and reading skills to their maximum potential. By adding 10 tablets that are available for my students to use on a daily basis, I am sure that my students will learn their phonics better, and faster, and will be on the road to becoming proficient readers in no time at all.
