The helmets I have selected provide students with a hands-on opportunity to examine various sports helmets that they may not have had the opportunity to see in person. The students will learn how helmets are manufactured with a focus on health, safety, science, manufacturing, math, and potential injury that occurs in a contact sport. The Engineering Design Process will be used by students to design, create, and test a prototype helmet for use in multiple sports. The culminating activity for the real-world project will include testing prototype helmets using various sized fresh melons (as heads) in a contact sport simulation situation.
