I teach 8th grade English and reading intervention classes to 7th and 8th graders testing well below grade level. My Junior High School is in Utah, a state in which there is the second-lowest per-pupil spending in the nation coupled with the highest classroom sizes in the nation. My students are diverse in background and ability. The differentiated instruction I provide must challenge and support students who read at the high school level, students who read at a first-grade level, and students who read at every level in between. My classroom is focused on Personalized Competency-Based Learning (PCBL,) Restorative Justice, and a balance of rigor between content and skills with a mix of classic, relevant, and student-selected texts.
