Covid-19 has caused more underlying problems in education than most people realize. My students are lacking foundations that we are working hard to help build and get them ready for the future. Counting money, simple multiplication, subtraction, and addition are just a few of the foundations some of my students are struggling with this year. Engineering cardboard boats to paddle across our school's swimming pool is just the project to get my students excited to put their math skills to use. My students will be doing a project in our last unit that puts together everything we have learned this school year. In this project we will engineer boats from cardboard and duct tape. How cool is that? Before we do this project we need to learn how to calculate how much cardboard and tape we need that will hold the weight of our teammates. Each team will plan and design their teams boats using the calculators and individual whiteboards that I’m asking for your help to purchase. Not only will these items be used for this project but these items will make a great addition to our classroom. The whiteboards and expo markers will assist in individualized classwork. I’m excited for the magnetic boards and manipulatives to help provide a highly visual way to teach and explore place value, fractions, operations, money, and more. I have also asked for two flexible seats to put in my classroom to give students the option of a different view to do their work.
