We have implemented a new reading process this year and our 2nd graders are working with literacy centers concerning phonological awareness and phonics skills. Most of the students in our district are from low income families and 70% are on free or reduced meal plans. Our community was also hit by natural disaster over the summer of 2007. Many families lost everything they had. This greatly impacts the students motivation to learn when they lose everything.
