My students are the definition of diversity in every possible way you can imagine, and it is wonderful. Each individual student needs me to hear them and reach then exactly where they are. The highly-gifted child is sitting beside the child reading below grade level. The very youngest, who could be more than a year younger, is working with the very oldest. They also represent economic diversity and cultural diversity. My 6th grade class is in one of two middle schools in a southern city school district.
