Exposure to non-fiction literature is a Common Core standard for Kindergarten, but many students do not find it as appealing as fiction stories. Scholastic Magazine provides age-appropriate writing and subject matter that Kindergarten students find appealing. Many magazines in this subscription align with curriculum being taught at that time and also with current events. Our engagement with Scholastic Magazine will broaden student awareness of life and the world beyond what the students experience in their own homes and neighborhoods. Additionally, use of a magazine format will expose students to a variety of text features that are not found in fictional literature and the concept of magazines as a literary medium.
