I am teaching math this year to approximately 70 fifth graders and am diving into flexible seating. I want to provide a more individualized learning environment for my students. During each class period, my students would have the opportunity to select a seating option in the room that will foster their academic success. My students would be able to feel empowered if they had more choice over their working environment. They also need to move. Flexible seating would allow my 5th graders to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which helps keep them more alert and focused. A variety of seating options encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, engaged, and productive.
