A large number of my students are struggling & reluctant readers. This is my 8th year teaching at a high poverty middle school mostly made up of English language learners. Many are reading 2 to 5 years below grade level and need a great deal of support and motivation to push forward. Coming from immigrant families, they often face challenges such as living in a less than ideal environment where gang activity and disruptions are commonplace, lacking access to books at home, and being unable to visit the public library because their parents are working around the clock to provide for them. As a result, my classroom is where they are discovering themselves as readers and my classroom library has become their number one source for reading material. I have been personally purchasing books for my students for 8 years, but it has been a challenge to keep up with the demand. Book choice directly influences a student's decision to read and read often, so more books equals more reading.
