Students have a difficult time solving mathematical and real world problems because the concepts are often difficult to understand. Providing them with manipulatives such as algebraic tiles will allow them to visualize and manipulate the situation to have a better understanding of how to solve the problem. This will provide students with a concrete model. They can manipulate the items to better understand what the problem is asking. The need for a strong foundation in algebraic and numerical thinking needs to start early as possible. Having these manipulatives will also provide opportunities for all modalities of learners from visual to kinesthetic.
