I work at a charter school that was founded within the last 3-ish years. Currently, the "library" is a shelf half-filled with secondhand thrift shop books.
I am hoping to raise money to buy 100-or-so books (chosen from the American Library Association's "Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Leaders") to furnish my classroom library. This library will be crucial in helping me to implement Nancie Atwell's Reading Workshop, which in turn will help create joyful, life-long readers.
Reading researchers like Nancie Atwell, Donalyn Miller, Stephen Krashen, and Alfie Kohn have argued forcefully for allowing students the ability to choose the books they read. The secondhand, throwaway books currently in the library have very little appeal to my students. These selected books, strategically chosen for their proven track-record with reluctant readers, will give my students a wide variety of book choices to begin to develop their own reading preferences and identities as life-long readers.
