This year, my 7th grade class read Speak and discussed in depth. I found a PDF of the whole novel online to read through Google Classroom, but it was riddled with typos and glitched out words. There were difficulties with work as well. Much of the work I assigned were on the computers, which made it difficult to either split the screen or switch between tabs to find evidence. As a first year teacher, I knew that discussing difficult topics like mental health and sexual assault would be difficult, but I had no idea. By far, the most difficult thing that I did not expect was how many of my students have a history of trauma, anxiety, and depression. Reading this book in my small, overcrowded classroom spiked anxiety for many of these students and made them uncomfortable. I would like to take the class outside to read this novel. I know that these students will benefit from fresh air and sunlight as we read the difficult parts. However, I cannot do this with MacBooks and iPads.
