Working in a lottery school, I'm lucky to have a diverse population. My classes are full of students from all sorts of racial and socio-economic backgrounds. They come from all over Queens -Flushing, Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Far Rockaway, Maspeth, etc.. The mix of cultures creates a perfect snapshot of the NYC Metropolitan area and I couldn't ask for a better gift. For education to be the great equalizer, kids need opportunities to grow along social and educational lines with all types of people. That's what I get in my classroom each period of each day. My school is "Blue Ribbon," but my students are the true champions. They bring themselves each and every day, their homes and families, their fears and successes, their hopes and dreams and doubts and desires to see themselves grow. They deserve every opportunity for success and I hope to give it to them!
