Every scholar in my classroom deserves a learning experience that is catered to their needs. No two scholars in my classroom share an exact reading or math level or have the ability to write or solve problems at the same pace. There are scholars on one side of the spectrum, who are ahead of the game, working well above grade level. Sitting next to them are scholars who have significant gaps in their learning, struggling to meet benchmarks set by the school district. No matter how thoughtful the lesson plan, there are scholars either bored by the repetition of skills they have already mastered or checked out because they cannot keep up. Lexia Power Up Literacy and STMath are online tools used by many teachers in DC Public Schools to offer scholars individualized instruction and encourage self-learning. With these chrome books, students will be able to rotate in skill-based groupings on Blended Learning days and have a productive day of learning no matter if they are on track, ahead, or playing catch up. One group will complete individualized activities on the laptop while the others work in small groups with a teacher or City Year. Teachers will be able to log onto Lexia and STMath at the end of the day and see how each scholar using the online learning is doing in specific areas and tailor their small group time to them. Our current technology is not dependable and shared with the entire school. If second graders need the computer lab middle school will miss out on a day of individualized learning. These laptops will be used to ensure that my middle school scholars have consistent personalized learning experiences that will help them grow into high schoolers who are prepared to and aware of their own assets and obstacles.
