As an art teacher for students with special needs I have found a connection with them and clay. There is something potent with feeling the earth on one's skin that harbors a connection between the hands and the mind. My students seem to really shine when I bring out the clay. I want to give my students an opportunity to grow in their creativity with a pottery wheel. My students will learn how to throw pots on this wheel. Many of these pots will become flower pots that our school ecology teacher can use to teach them about growing things. The students will gain multiple opportunities for learning with the use of a pottery wheel, and perhaps be able to sell their work at local coffee shops or even art festivals. My hope is that this could give my student's a sense of pride and strong self-esteem by not only creating, but seeing a work of their hands and minds to be desirable to others. Imagine the impact that would have on our special needs students who often hold negative feelings towards themselves on the account of their disabilities.
