There are about 25 students in my ninth grade photography class. We are currently using one of the modular classrooms for our foundation of photography class. The course will run the full length of the school year. Due to additional electives and enrichment courses, funding is scarce and will not adequately support a new photography class. This will be the first year we've had this class, so I will be purchasing materials for the first time. Basically, we are starting from scratch. My goal is for donors to provide photo paper, file storage devices, and a Polaroid camera to get us started. The additional cameras will be provided by the school. By donating the requested items, our students will be able to participate in the entire photography process, not just by taking the usual selfie but learning to capture, develop and frame the world around them. For many of my students, this will be the first time they will hold a camera, let alone print a photograph. Camera phones have become the replacement of this soon-to-be-lost art form. If we don't engage and inspire our students through photography, they will never witness the magic of a blindly-capture image coming to life in a darkroom.
