AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination, a college readiness system. Never heard of it? Well, that's what I teach, and it's all about making college dreams a reality for underrepresented populations. My students desperately want to go to college, and they are willing to work as hard as it takes to get there. Because they have grown up in a small, rural, primarily Native Hawaiian community on the leeward coast of Oahu, their experiences are narrow. As I look through the cannon of works that my students will be expected to have read before attending college, I worry that they just won't be prepared. I fell in love with reading in middle school, and now I have the opportunity to inspire reluctant readers from 7th to 12th grade. That's right, I teach a class of students in each of six different grade levels. It's an exciting challenge, and it's my personal goal to make all of them life-long lovers of reading.
