My high school students crave new stories that are powerful, relevant, and transformative. I wish to create a Sci-Fi (Science Fiction) unit that allows my students not only to critique systems of injustice, but to dream of new worlds of the future. Octavia Butler's famous novel, "Parable of the Sower" is set in the near future where the teenage heroine, Lauren, fights for survival and discovers a new vision for humanity. My students would benefit from reading the Graphic Novel Adaptation of this book in two ways: It will allow them to experience and critique a literary art form which most have not read. Furthermore, it will provide struggling readers and more visual learners to experience a complex and dense novel form in an efficient and accessible way. Upon completion, students will make connects through researching contemporary issues featured in the book such as student movements, racial violence, global climate change, and the birth of new religions.
