Project Mindstorm is a robotics program that will service grades 2-5. We will be using LEGO robotics kits to bring our STEM program to life at our school. The program's goal is to help our students increase their ability to be creative and innovative thinkers. Teaching robotics will allow students to learn how science, engineering, math, and technology work together and interact. Robotics allows a wide range of students to show their creativity. Learning to program computers and robots will help make students more likely to get a job in the future and earn more money in their lifetime. Our ultimate goal is to create excitement in the classroom while pushing our students to new levels of academic performance while also instilling characteristics that will help them to be successful in the future. Project Mindstorms will improve students’ abilities to complete core STEM tasks using the engineer design process to guide their questioning, planning, creating, improving, and problem-solving abilities. We will formatively assess whether the students are successfully meeting the learning outcomes by observing them build the robots and code them to complete mission tasks for competition. There are also assessments built into the LEGO lesson plans that accompany the robotics kits. These assessments give students projects they must complete, but they also assess their understanding of the lesson. Pre and post-assessments will be given to show growth in the standards being utilized through this program. These lessons and assessments cover science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
