Every day in class we spend time in math groups to explore new concepts and solidify ones that might have slipped away in the past. The focus group for each concept begins with me working on a mini lesson, which allows me to differentiate effectively with 7-8 students. More often than not the second and third group spends time working on a game, worksheet, or challenge problem together under their own guidance before switching to my station. This is an effective station but can falter if used twice in a row. Occasionally a group will have access to technology during one rotation, though this is rare because we share thirty Chromebooks with almost four hundred students. I'm requesting six Samsung Chromebook laptop computers for my classroom. A third rotation with our own classroom Chromebooks will astronomically benefit my students. There are several online math programs that are designed to strategically and effectively meet students where they are at. In my school, I use a combination of MobyMax and ProdigyGames to engage the students in individualized learning and monitor every misconception and new skill mastered along the way. This is extremely valuable information that can be generated during self-guided learning. Assessing students who range in skills from 1st grade to 4th grade is difficult, to say the least. With a Chromebook, I will be able to track my students' progress. The data alone would change our year tremendously as I could use it to tweak my groups' mini lessons, making sure my third graders go into the next year with the utmost mathematical confidence.
