The students in our program come to us because traditional school does not work for them for various reasons. It's a tighter-knit community we have in this school compared to the main high schools in our district, so we want it to be less formal, structured, and "school-like". An area rug is a big step in making a plain, cold classroom feel like a comfortable place to be and learn. The modern area rug makes it feel differently than a traditional classroom that these students struggled in. By filling the classroom with non-classroom comforts, the students are more likely to attend and more likely to get work done and will graduate to be helpful, productive members of the community.
