I teach at a Title I funded school where over 75% of the population qualifies for free/reduced lunches. My 5th graders come from diverse cultural backgrounds, with most of them speaking English as a second language. My students work hard and everyday they arrive with a positive attitude that's contagious. We are all family here, so you'll be delighted to find students and teacher hanging out in the class during recess and lunch, playing games or helping one another out on assignments. In the beginning of the year, the kids weren't reading for fun as much as I would have hoped. With the proper incentives, like a pizza party and other prizes, my class read WAY more during the second trimester. The other day one of my former reluctant readers pulled me aside for an update on "the best book ever." He finished by saying, "I can't wait to read more!" I'm hoping that with a nudge in the right direction, my students will discover for themselves how fun and rewarding reading can be.
