Teaching for me has been a sobering realization of how the education system fails our students each year. All fifty-four of my 7th and 8th grade students are reading at a 2nd or 3rd grade level. But am I teaching an ESL class? No. None of my students came to this country recently. In fact, most of them have been in the school system since kindergarten! These young adults have been attending schools for 7 to 9 years, and yet have been allowed to slip so far behind it is embarrassing – but I am not referring to my students. It is an embarrassment to the educational system that has failed them and is now trying to help them by providing intervention English classes. These are the classes I teach, intervention English, not ESL.
