My students must keep up with the latest advancements in education to spark an interest in learning. Education is changing every single day, and so are the interests of my students.
Struggling readers will often pick up a comic book because the pictures and visuals are less intimidating than a typical book. I want to encourage their love of reading by supplying books that fit with their interest. Graphic novels still provide rich text, but also accompany the text with fun, interactive pictures that aid in comprehension. I also included many read alouds that focus on growth mindset and positive thinking to encourage hard work and determination all year long.
In order to accommodate to my students' love of technology I try to use computers daily in our class. Unfortunately, most students either don't have headphones, or they get tangled and unusable within the first few days. By providing them earbuds accompanied with a case, students will be able to use these year round. Earbuds help students stay focused on their task instead of be distracted by the noise around them.
Although being outside and playing is our preference, Indiana weather doesn't always cooperate. Due to the inclement weather, we are often forced to have indoor recess. I want to provide my students board games and card games that encourage team work, competition, and social skills. The board games I selected also encourage critical thinking skills, so while they are playing a game they might accidentally learn too!
