For 22 years, I have taught in the same classroom with many broken uncomfortable desks that are not conducive to the variety of activities that allow for collaborative learning experiences, active involvement with opportunities to engage all students in a setting that is promoting a comfortable desire for students to participate. These tables will allow movement, various groupings and support social interaction and development. Due to budget cuts, my classes are increasing from 24-28 up to 40-42 per class period. Teaching large groups of students requires student-centered classrooms. I know from years of experience, a creative learning space will positively influence how students feel at school and support student success. These tables will also increase student engagement and allow learners to be able to quickly reconfigure our classroom to suit the preferred working style and the task at hand for small group work or larger Socratic Seminar learning experiences.
